JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE : Food Safety and Safety Coordinator

DEPARTMENT : Food Safety and Safety

LOCATION : Camarillo, CA

REPORTS TO : Food Safety and Safety Manager

TRAVEL : Yes

FLSA : Non-Exempt

SALARY : $28 (DOE)

WORK SCHEDULE : Minimum of 40 hours per week scheduled as determined by Supervisor and must be available to respond to incidents, including occasional after-hours support.

General Description:

The Food Safety & Safety Coordinator plays a vital role in promoting a culture of safety, quality, and compliance across all fields and facility operations. Based in Camarillo, CA, and reporting to the Food Safety & Safety Manager, this hands-on role supports both food safety systems and worker safety programs conducting inspections, leading trainings, responding to incidents, and helping maintain regulatory compliance (OSHA, FSMA, HACCP, GFSI, etc.). You'll work closely with production, sanitation, field supervisors, and HR to deliver real-time support that keeps our people and product safe day and night.

While this role does not directly manage or discipline employees, it is responsible for identifying non-compliance, reporting issues to the appropriate manager, and ensuring that corrective actions are implemented and sustained.

Employee Value Proposition:

· Purpose : This role safeguards both people and produce. You’ll be a front-line contributor to a workplace culture where safety, sanitation, and compliance are non-negotiable, supporting our values and protecting our brand.

· Growth : You’ll gain cross-functional exposure in a fast-paced operation that includes farming, packing, and compliance. From audit prep to emergency drills, this role has real impact with room to grow into expanded leadership or technical scope.

· Motivators Ideal for someone who enjoys field work, fast response, and practical problem-solving. You’ll work where safety meets agriculture and where no two days are the same.

Major Performance Objectives:

  1. Establish Safety Presence Across All Areas (First 60 Days): Lead daily walkthroughs across the packhouse, field, and cooler — including random checks on night shifts. Identify unsafe conditions and ensure corrective actions are taken. Build rapport with field and facility supervisors.
  2. Support and Deliver Targeted Safety Training (0–6 Months): Partner with the Safety Manager to co-develop and deliver safety trainings across roles and shifts. Ensure all seasonal and task-specific topics (e.g., pesticide safety, equipment use, heat illness) are documented and delivered bilingually where needed.
  3. Own Sanitation & Chemical Safety Oversight (By Month 6): Audit chemical handling, sanitation practices, PPE usage, and tool segregation (e.g., color-coded cleaning gear). Ensure compliance with SDS, eyewash access, spill kits, and ventilation rules.
  4. Lead or Assist in Incident Investigations (Ongoing) : Respond promptly to injuries, near-misses, or exposures — day or night. Document, investigate, and help implement corrective actions. Coordinate root cause analysis with supervisors and HR.
  5. Lead or Assist in Incident Investigations (Ongoing): Respond promptly to injuries, near-misses, or exposures — day or night. Document, investigate, and help implement corrective actions. Coordinate root cause analysis with supervisors and HR.
  6. Enhance Food Safety Systems (0–9 Months): Maintain accurate records for audits, including SOPs, HACCP plans, training logs, and internal inspections. Support preparation and participation in GFSI, FSMA, and customer audits.

Critical Subtasks:

· Conduct Daily and Random Safety Walkthroughs: Visit packhouse, cooler, and field areas to assess lighting, PPE use, chemical handling, and other hazards.

· Monitor Training Records and Compliance Logs: Track attendance and sign-offs for all safety and food safety trainings. Maintain accurate logs in coordination with HR.

· Perform Bilingual Safety Coaching: Deliver safety instructions and explanations clearly in both English and Spanish. Translate key safety messages as needed.

· Support Emergency Preparedness & Drills : Help coordinate fire, spill, and evacuation drills across all locations. Confirm all teams know protocols.

· Strengthen Housekeeping Standards: Proactively identify and address areas needing improvement, particularly around coolers, equipment zones, and field supply sheds, to maintain a clean and organized environment.

· Maintain Safety Supply Inventory: Ensure availability and proper use of PPE (vests, gloves, masks, respirators), signage, and training tools.

· Coordinate Safety for Night and Weekend Shifts: Conduct night checks, validate protocols are followed during non-core hours, and be on call for incident support.

· Report and Follow Up on Safety Non-Compliance: Identify and document any unsafe behavior or violations of safety policy. Communicate findings clearly to supervisors or department managers for resolution. Ensure appropriate follow-up occurs and that corrective actions are verified over time.

Culture and Situation Fit:

This role fits someone who leads by example, embraces fieldwork, and communicates clearly across diverse teams. You must be:

· Accountable for spotting and solving safety risks

· Coachable and open to learning new systems or regulations

· Solution-oriented in real-time, not just reactive

· Resilient under pressure, especially during incidents

· A clear, calm communicator — in both English and Spanish preferred

This is a fast-paced, hands-on operation where leadership means being present and engaged on the ground. You’re expected to work directly with supervisors and hourly teams, with an uncompromising commitment to safety in every decision.

Minimum Qualifications:

· 1–3 years of experience in food safety, workplace safety, or compliance support

· Familiarity with OSHA, FSMA, GFSI, and HACCP practices

· Strong observational and communication skills

· Comfortable with night shift inspections and occasional off-hour incident response

· Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred

· Able to walk/stand long hours and lift up to 30 lbs

· Detail-oriented with solid documentation skills (training logs, audit prep, etc.)
